Network drivers produce streams of octets which are well-defined by
various protocols.  No secrets there.  Printer and video card
manufacturers consider their low-level protocols to be proprietary
information (plausible; you learn the capabilities of the hardware
and/or firmware from the command set) and keep them secret (for some
reason; it's not like they're hard to reverse engineer).
