I recently tried to install ubuntu 13.04 and Mint 15 (based on 13.04) and had all kinds of problems. When the install broke because it couldn't download ibus-anthy I finally gave up and went back to 12.10. Also, all the japanses lang-pack stuff failed to install. 12.10 ubuntu and mint 14 cinnimon both went in with no errors. I'm wondering if ubuntu is changing it's underlying language support or something. It seems crazy... If it's available, on kubuntu, you might try installing the google IME (ibus-mozc) and see if that works. Steve S.
I tried Mint and have it on my "things I'd prefer doing if my only other choice was being the only cabin boy on a slow-moving Greek freighter." I use a lot of Japanese and US government databases in my work that the French programmers of Mint Do Something To Mozilla (sorry for the technical term, there) that makes it impossible to connect to high security sites. And the fix was more painful than finding another Linux version to replace it with.

The return to 12.10 is seeming more and more rational. But, I'll take your suggestion and try ibus-mosc and see whether that makes the desired difference. In my case (and, I think, in Scott's case) Japanese input in everything else worked. It's only the program I regularly use to make money that is broken.
