It is true that zipping jpeg files is usually pointless in terms of
saving space.  And in some cases, zipping it can even expand files.

One advantage to zipping is error correction.  Of course, it can only
do so much, but it may be worth it if you're transferring files.

Zip also allows you to gather files together for transmission (i.e.,
exactly what tar is used for).

But other than these two minor points, I can't think of any other
reason for zipping jpegs...

I usually use a Perl script to do that.  I don't know of any program
that would do this for me.
