I'd agree with Edward that, in the past, the 
need to compile and install drivers has been 
a real hassle. In the "good old days", any 
attempt to compile a manufacturer-supplied 
network chip driver would result in a zillion 
errors and dependency problems.  

Now there are YUM-mie ways of virtually 
automatically taking care of dependencies, and 
you can swap in a supported network card to 
download a fixed driver for your network chip 
(like Realtek) rather that trying to fix the 
problem yourself by recompiling. 

Now the boot is on the other foot: 
LINUX supports SATA with AHCI out of the box, 
but motherboard makers have been forced to make 
IDE emulation of SATA the default because many 
hobbyists don't understand that Windows requires 
manual installation of a SATA chipset driver 
in order to recognize a native SATA AHCI disk.
