I think this is related to Mattia's post from yesterday. The "im-switch"
utility ties your input-method settings to your locale.

So you *might* just need to run it while in your en_US.UTF8 locale.

I didn't voluntarily move to ibus, just got it from whichever ubuntu
distro it started with. But I've no complaints, it seems to work with
everything, and it is great if you want more than just English/Japanese.
