I hate to break it to you, but the people developing Unity (including
their HCI group) are well-paid (at least, I know some people with the
same employer who have no complaints).  Dunno about GNOME 3, but I
suspect those folks are professionals, too, quite possibly in all
senses of the word.  They have two differences from the Big Two:

1.  They don't have as much money as Apple or Microsoft.

2.  But at least their problem is bigger!  (Because unlike Apple or
    MSFT, they're not in a position to force you to use their WM and
    their SM and their dock etc etc.)
