I think the entire purpose of having NetworkManager installed by default 
on so many distributions is to give budding system administrators some 
experience with the removal functionality of their package manager.

I do things basically the same way, regardless of which distro: minimal 
install (and then add whatever i actually need) and ban NetworkManager. 
On my desktop i use AfterStep, so i guess given its current popularity 
that pretty much counts as avoiding desktop defaults too.
