Perhaps indirectly related to your job search but either you or your wife might want to consider the Kanji Kentei exams. There are 10 levels at least but you can start at any level. It is humiliating (humbling? :-) ) to take an exam with 5 year olds but it might complement the JLPT since the questions aren't multiple choice.

Actually, in my daily life, very few Japanese people talk to me by giving me 4 choices. ;-)
