Yeah, I did that, Josh. With the other niggles I decided it wasn't
worth pursuing, though, since MS (the Shuttleworth one) has
decreed that Gnome will no longer be provided as an option in
the next release. I'm now happily back and nicely set up (except
for the /home partition) on Lucid 10.04 LTS. However, that doesn't
look like a permanent solution, so I'm now looking for alternatives
and wondering if we should expect a Gnobuntu or something
concurrent with the next Ubuntu release.

I don't encrypt anything ever, Christian. And as a PC "user"
I'm not comfortable with my level of expertise on this. I think
I'll try the steps Romeo listed (eliding the encryption parts)
when I work up the nerve. It's a bit uncomfortable for me as
I am not a programmer or even trained in anything to do with
computers, like sysadmin or whatever. I'm pretty sure I have
to have a /home folder on the root (sda1) partition so I can
mount the sda7 partition there as "/home" and I _think_ I need
another home folder on sda7 with all my home files in it, so
I'll try going that route. As I say, once I work up the nerve.
