It might be interesting to diff the printenv output on each machine,
looking for anything that looks like a language or locale setting.

Or failing that, the firefox configuration on each.

I've not had any problems with skype; maybe you should consider that
your newer box is setup more correctly and you just have a wild firefox
setting? (Oh, and, just looking at your original post, thunderbird.)

I'm using en_US or en_GB everywhere (*), so extreme measures like that
shouldn't be necessary. :-)

*: Actually I run thunderbird with LC_TIME=en_DK.UTF8, to get the date
format display I wanted.
