I'm still reading this thread and considering the possibilities.

Unresponsiveness and UI stickiness seem to be rearing their ugly head
again, so I'm not 100% confident that this problem has gone away.

I think that as I attack different angles, I'm shaving off related, but
not central, causes of slower performance. So the SSH setting probably
was an efficiency issue that might have always been there, and changing
it has improved things, but I'm still susceptible to whatever has
changed in the last week or so to make the responsiveness a noticeable
problem.
