Do a diff of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf on both machines (or wherever
Ubuntu keeps it this week).  (NB You may need to work a little harder
than that, especially if GNUMB and/or gcoungh is involved.)

If something shows up that hits you between the eyes, just post the
executive summary.  If not, post the diffs.

My bet is that they switched the order of Japanese and Chinese fonts
somewhere in fonts.conf, or perhaps language.
