TLUG,
I was down at the Docomo shop last week, and, among other things, I
asked when my HT-03A would be upgraded from its current Android 1.6 to 2.2.
They wouldn't say, they didn't know, blah blah blah...
Is it Docomo or HTC (or both)? Wikipedia states the HTC Magic's OS as
Android 2.2.1 but I couldn't find any references to confirm that. If
HTC did release a Froyo update and Docomo failed to add their changes
(APNs, IMEs etc.) and push it then I'd be upset with them as well.
I also asked how much it might cost me to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy.
You know, since it has version 2.2 and all. About 30,000 yen. Huh. Can't
help but wonder if the lack of an update has anything to do with the
profit they make from me switching phones...
It may not be that cynical but you're right that the Galaxy S eliminates
any incentive for Docomo to pressure HTC to release Froyo for the Magic.
Anyway, simply wondering if maybe there was some kind of hardware
limitation that prevented my phone from using the latest Android
version, I came across these instructions for upgrading the ROM:
http://softbanksucks.blogspot.com/2010/09/universal-androot-works-on-docomo-ht.html
Simple, straightforward, and worked like a charm.
Now, not only is my HT-03A running 2.2, allowing me to have the latest
features, it's a heck of a lot faster, too.
Highly recommend it.
I'm curious to know if Docomo adds customizations which may be required
for pake-houdai, MMS etc. which would be missing in Cyanogen. For
instance, Softbank checks the MMS user agent so you need a hacked
Mms.apk for unofficial ROMs. I also recall reading about a binary which
updates the APN settings for pake-houdai. For those reasons I never
used Softbank data with my unlocked European HTC Hero. Just rooting an
official ROM shouldn't affect any of those customizations.
