I find that for workstations it's somewhat acceptable to muck around
with this sort of stuff. I too am recently a victim of ubuntu's
automagical networking scripts (for some reason it seems to like to
rewrite my /etc/resolv.conf on reboot). However, I can also remember a
time not too long ago where during installs I had to carefully copy
around my precious X11 conf file that took me weeks to perfect. I also
remember spending very large blocks of time dealing with my sound
card. Now, in my experience at least, for the most part hardware just
works. In fact, I feel sort of stupid because I don't actually know
what it's doing anymore.

For servers on the other hand, I wouldn't tollerate the automatic
rewriting of /etc/resolv.conf or anything else for that matter beyond
a single reboot and that's probably one of the reasons why I stick to
debian stable for servers.

cheers,
sach
