The background of trying to use an old debian release with an old kernel
is that I have a driver for a specific piece of hardware which is
written for 2.4 kernels,

Manufacturer driver information is here:

I think I can't compile the manufacturer's linux module or the
alternative module until I set up kernel sources for the running kernel,
but I did compile the 2.4 kernel module found here:
http://www.robot.uji.es/lab/plone/Members/mprats/jr3/

Looks pretty much abandoned by the vendor[1]. There is a driver in staging for 2.6.34 that might be for the same board.

drivers/staging/comedi/drivers/jr3_pci.c

Driver: jr3_pci
Description: JR3/PCI force sensor board
Author: Anders Blomdell <anders.blomdell@example.com>
Status: works
Devices: [JR3] PCI force sensor board (jr3_pci)
