I wonder how that works for people on private health care?

Not sure I can add much - the gaikokujin torokushou (gaijin card /  
alien registration ) does seem to have been depricated somewhat of  
late, and more places are happy with my driving license as ID over it  
in recent years.

On the visa front I managed to get permanent residency which  
simplifies it a bit and means I just need to sort the re-entry permit.

For work visa I thought the spouse visa covered that also(?). Either  
way how about a linkedin.com link and yes, definitely line up as many  
meetings/ interviews as you can, maybe even come over for a week for  
face to face.
