[tlug] CP a file set

I have a folder hierarchy that contains a variety of file formats and I want to reproduce the same hierarchy with the folders that contain files of a specified extension and those files.
Like a web site with folders from which I want to extract all the image files etc.
How can I do that without shell scripting, with only pipes and commands ? I use OSX 10.5.8.
