Sometimes, you can get away with that, especially when they don't
*really* need the dependency--Fedora, especially, will have some obscure
dependencies that aren't really needed.  However, if it really needs the
library, and it's a 32 bit program, it usually won't work (probably
always won't) work if it's given a 64 bit library.
