Nobody said anything about a virtual machine.

I sit at a run-of-the-mill company XP desktop, where I am supposed to
get my work done, not reinstall the OS, and that's why I have to do it
under Windows XP.

The actual files are on a network share on the file server, because this
is a company network and I keep the files where they are backed up by a
professional, not on my local machine.

Look, I appreciate your help, but I thought it was clear in the original
post that "do it under Linux instead" is not an option, because in that
case I would have done it under Linux and not posted the question...
