Is this on RH?  If so, much as it goes against your grain, the rpms
usually work pretty well. 

(Don't know how familiar you are with nagios, but there's a nice little
article by Max Hetrick about using it in CentOS as well.  When I first
started with Nagios, I found it handy.  On the other hand, its official
docs are probably less obscure to you than they were to me.)
