Hi John, glad you got that to work OK. Like Stephen, I'm curious what the audience did not like. After all, these are fonts designed by Japanese themselves. Do they have any positive likes? Sadly, many researchers in the scientific sphere seem to like brush-stroke-style (gyou-shotai) bold characters for presentations. Headache in 10 seconds....

I had tried the IPA fonts before I started whining about it to the list and you.

I guess the conclusion from you all is that Mr Kuroda and Mr Sano are too fussy about the fonts. I will ask them what is wrong.

At the risk of sounding silly: could you try using the same fonts in
MS Word and seeing if there is any difference---or perhaps you managed

Unfortunately I don't have MS Word ;-)

to think that you used the fonts without actually using them! (I.e,
maru and gothic were again the default fonts... Wadalab). The reason I
mention this is that unless you use xelatex you have some work to do
before latex can understand the IPA fonts (or so I believe).

The Ubuntu package has them all ready to be used (goth and maru) font families.
