Hi John, glad you got that to work OK.  Like Stephen, I'm curious what
the audience did not like. After all, these are fonts designed by
Japanese themselves. Do they have any positive likes? Sadly, many
researchers in the scientific sphere seem to like brush-stroke-style
(gyou-shotai) bold characters for presentations. Headache in 10
seconds....

pTeX apparently stretches space but I know little about that (from
memory of a presentation I attended on the algorithm to do that).

At the risk of sounding silly: could you try using the same fonts in
MS Word and seeing if there is any difference---or perhaps you managed
to think that you used the fonts without actually using them! (I.e,
maru and gothic were again the default fonts... Wadalab). The reason I
mention this is that unless you use xelatex you have some work to do
before latex can understand the IPA fonts (or so I believe).
