Sure, I used the pptp driver. One difference from before is that I
previously had to unselect "Exclusive device access", but that option
has dissappeared from the network manager applet in 8.10.

Good idea. I still have a 8.04 machine running, and will try to get
VPN working there. Then I will compare the config files in /etc. If it
still doesn't work I will probably check if it works with the live CD,
and then reinstall from scratch instead of upgrading.
