The first image on this page, at least, is referenced with a relative
path.  I also checked case-sensitivity; I assume your filesystem is
case sensitive, and if the webserver wasn't it might have accepted
links that didn't work locally, but it seems that's not the case.

I began the site at the beginning (stupidly) with mixed case file names, but it's always worked.  The only variable I can see is that the files have been moved, but since they work once uploaded (I would be less surprised if it was the other way around)....

 

Just ruling out possibilities, no answers, I'm afraid...

Since it's working on-line, there's no time pressure to get it solved.  I'll keep thinking about it and experimenting until something becomes apparent.  So it couldn't be a permissions issue - where the browser can't access the images not because of the file path, but because of them being seen as belonging to another user that the browser doesn't have access to?
