Other than video card info of course, the only conciderable variation
was the XkbModel option in your conf.  The howto I was following when I
set things up did not reference keyboard model options.

:-)  As it was, just saing that the layout was jp had it mostly working
except for a few keys.  Once I added the line 

Option	    "XkbModel" "jp106"

It started working fine!

Your info got me fixed.  :)
