It's similar to the difference between writing text in a diary that *noone*
is supposed to ever read and writing a book.

Once you get over the ego problems of having someone tell you "that
sucks, please rewrite it a little differently along these lines ..."
you are well
on your way to becoming a master programmer.

The biggest disservice Microsoft is doing now is fudding Open Source.
I gladly wrote letters of recommendation for graduating students who had
contributed to XEmacs.  Best real world experience in the world you can
get without submitting a resume first and you have to start somewhere.

My own contributions follow me everywhere.  When I started at Cisco, I was
shocked at first at all the hits I got on my name in their internal
internet search.
