Sure, but variations in the implementation technique can make the
CAPTCHA bot miss, and by keeping a low profile with your home-brew
implementation of a proven technique (which has been broken, but took
awhile), you can probably stay out of the arms race for a good while.

That's all it's about: buying enough time.
