Anyway, it's a bummer getting old. My emacs problems went away when I
realized I had (seniorily) forgotten to set my language environment to
Japanese. Then I installed latex-unicode, which improved things a bit,
but I'm still having font issues:

grep: udmj07.log: No such file or directory
mktextfm: `mf-nowin -progname=mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode;
input udmj07' failed to make udmj07.tfm.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.

! Font C70/min/m/n/17.28/07=udmj07 at 17.28pt not loadable: Metric (TFM)
file not found.

I have no idea what this means (and this time it has nothing to do with
using GNU Emacs, Stephen).
