What was the sum size of the images before and after? I would think that
combining images would result in size savings due to the compression
algorithms being able to work on larger amounts of data, especially for
small images. There would also be less overhead for colour tables and
the like, though I don't know how significant that would be.

They both support inline images, just not on HTML pages. We build Flash
pages on the fly with inline images and all sorts of other cute tricks;
if you want to do this on your site, feel free to talk to us.
