Thank you all for responding.

I went down to the store again this afternoon, and there was good news and bad news.

On the good side, I looked at the BIOS and confirmed that it can boot from a USB CD Drive, a "USB Device", and a network boot.

But on the other hand, I've confirmed that the battery that comes with it is completely dead. As (another) Dave pointed out, replacing the battery can cost a lot, and take a way a lot of the joy of getting a cheap used laptop.

I've been looking on the net, and can't find a place that even actually sells batteries for this model (it's an NEC "Versapro" series). If it's discontinued, that would be even more of a joy killer.

So I've decided to pause for a bit and think about this some more.

Maybe I should just wait until I can afford one of these:
