In vim, it's pretty obscure.  There's the word INSERT in bold letters at
the bottom, but aside from that, there aren't any clues that I see.  

Errm, perhaps I should add that you only see that if you're in insert
mode.  :)


In FreeBSD's nvi, I don't see anything indicating mode. 

Stuart, I hope you realize I'm trying to be droll, not snide.  Firstly,
I admire emacs users--I tried to learn it once, but decided I should
study simpler operating systems (yeah, I know, old joke), and secondly,
I'm assuming that you weren't using vim, or you would have seen the
INSERT thingie.
