The way I learned vi was quick and embarrassing. I thought I was getting
to be elite because I knew pico.  (At the time, nano, which is similar,
wasn't widespread.)

My boss asked me to edit something on the AIX mainframe.  I went in
typed pico <whatever> and got command not found. 

(No, at the time I didn't know it only came with pine, I was still much
more of a Windows person then.)

He said, (not nastily, he was a friend and mentor as well as boss) "You
don't know how to use vi?  Never mind, I'll do it.

Guess what I worked on learning that night?  The next day I called and
said, "Don't worry, I can do it from now on."
