Thank you all for replying.

So the most likely explanation for this situation is that as spammers 
were successfully delivering email to my domain, they were sending more 
and more spam. As time goes on, each month the number of spam being sent 
in any one time is more and more, until it got to the point where so 
much spam was coming in at any one time so as to spike the mail server's 
usage, and potentially run out of memory.

Does that sound right?
