MyISAM tables so if some is being allocated, it would seem like a waste.

It seems Debian ships without innodb so YMMV ;-)
In any case, you can see whats loaded in your mysql or any
process using

 pmap -x <pid_of_interest>

This command is useful when profiling your memory use at runtime.
