However in an alpha of the latest Ubuntu (something Gibbon) I did the
following.
...
That was part of what I was complaining about.
For me, doing that is not so hard, but for the
average user, who doesn't know an RC file from
an email...  Not so good ^^;
for Ubuntu 7.04 I didn't do this. I use tcsh however. The default environent set up the local for me. Actually, I don't have LC_CTYPE set. The environment set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 and locale looks ok. Also, XMODIFIERS isn't set in any of my files, but when i echo them, they are correct, so I'm inheriting them.

In openoffice, I made sure to pick a Japanese font. Did you do that? (You being Ken, not Steve.)

I did select a japanese font, but you do that for for asian support ... it has nothing to do with scim/uim.

Also did you add support for Japanese in Tools, Options, Languages?
...
I have experienced those issues under Feisty, and under older
versions of Ubuntu. Ran into the same problems under Debian
as well. It is quite possible that the new package is better
built. I hope so! ^_^
When I went to the SCIM setup gui in preferences I deselected everything then selected english and japanese as I recall. It went out and got the appropriate packages for me.

I have a machine I need to bring up just for fun. Hopefully I'll get that in the next few days. I'll keep better track of what it takes this time.
