Oops, sorry I never got to posting a follow-up.

$40/month. The list of what is covered by "managed" matched what I was
after (and obviously far less than what you define as "managed" for
50,000 yen/month).

It uses "Virtuozza" instead of "xen", which a friendly unix guru
informed me is a downside. But so far it is the only managed VPS hosting
I've found.

We're going to try a test site on it; we would've signed up Monday but
that got postponed due to the application form being far too confusing.
Not a promising start, but good system administration and well-designed
web forms don't have to go hand in hand.

If anyone else is looking for something similar ask me in 2-3 weeks how
we're getting on.
