I went through four cameras, all of which were repaired at least two times each. One of them I sold cheaply after the second repair and the other three are interesting Y180,000 paperweights. One of the editing decks cost Y200,000 and Y50,000 to repair (and is now completely non-functional), not to mention Y30,000 and Y50,000 yen for editing controllers, etc. My bank account is empty because I stupidly gave the money to Sony for short-life equipment.

I see ads for places that will take your old analog tapes and digitize
them for you, but haven't tried them personally.

At a local shop they were advertising that and I considered it, but it's pretty pricey and I have hundreds of tapes... with the volume of material I have, I'll probably save money (or break even or almost break even) by buying the hardware to do it myself.
