I looked at Laser printers at Bic Camera, but wasn't sure of linux
compatibility (or rather, the only ones that explicitly said either
linux or postscript support were big and expensive). So for the moment I
bought another Epson cyan cartridge, at 850 yen, to get my urgent
print-out done.

The Brother HL2040 at 16,800 (plus 20% points, making it about 13,500
yen) looks good, not too bulky, and now I'm home again I find it seems
to have good linux support [1][2]. The built in toner will do 1500
pages, which is 2+ years for me, and a replacement cartridge was around
5-6000 yen and will do 2500 pages.

If they'd mentioned the linux support in the brochure I'd have bought it
on the spot.

They do support Linux. But it seems to have a few[1] problems none the less.
