Basically, in Ruby a String is a string of bytes, not characters, and
all of the standard methods treat it that way.

Just like perl 5.6, PHP 5  and other non unicode aware languages/environments.

So long as know what this
means and you remember this, life is not too difficult.

really ? - so how do you *easily* get a character count for a string of utf-8 bytes ?
