Re: Learn a Variety of Languages . . . . . . . (was: Re: [tlug] Re: Bourne Shell is the most appropriate scripting language)

Always wondering if this is an invitation for a flamefest.

Anyway, I advise you to just try them out.

Having learned (in order): Basic (GFA variant), ASM 680x0, Pascal, C,
C++, Java, CAML, Objective-C, PHP, Perl, various shell dialects,
Python, Scheme (for Gimp script-fu)...

... and of course written at least a dozen thousand lines of code in each..

I always ended up coming back to Python for all my needs, both on
Windows and Linux.
I hear that Ruby is enjoying the same kind of status among its
supporters and both communities learn from each other, both studying
strong points and mistakes.

The .NET community gets stronger everyday too but I have yet to see
anything that I need from the .NET platform for me to turn the back on
my favorite language. Especially as .NET (and Java) have language
binding for both Python and Ruby.

I would say that Perl used to be my normal tool for quick and dirty
scripts but I surely do not want to go and look back at any of my
larger Perl projects.

Have fun!

Guillaume
