Perhaps I should rephrase my question:

Can anyone shed light on my problem? At this point, I have no clue
whether it is an XEmacs issue, a SCIM issue, or something I am doing
wrong.

What do other TLUGgers use to input UTF8 Japanese in XEmacs or GNU Emacs?
