I see that the patch has been merged into 2.6.18.2 and I'm building a
new kernel now.

Interestingly enough, cards with capacities under 2GB were working
*without* support for MMC. This time I'm building the kernel *with* MMC
support but I'm at a loss as to how I'm supposed to tie this block
device in with usb-storage.

I'll see if it "just works", although I don't hold out much hope.
