This is normally a font issue.  Install the same fonts and use
Ghostscript, you'll get equally good results (in my experience, except
with Microsoft fonts).  If $48 will buy you fonts that are visibly
better, I'd say that's a very good buy.

The main advantage to Adobe in my experience is if you need the most
recent language features.  But I doubt you'll get those for $48 on
ebay. :-)
