If by "trend" you mean "2.6 is in general perceptibly faster, more
featureful, and robust than 2.4", the answer is "yes."  Linux has
learned a lot about VM management and SMP since 2.4.  These are likely
to provide substantial improvements for many things you might want to
do.  Can you count on such spectacular improvements in all services?
"No."

If by "trend" you mean, "our software is still so slow as to be
unusable; can we hope for another 5-6X improvement in Linux 2.8?", my
answer is "fix your software."  :-)
