You may consider using the VMWare Server Beta instead.  It gives you
both the console interface as well as the webinterface.  Seems pretty
stable (its built on GSX server after all) on my test machine.The
other advantage is that you can run it without X, and only use a
remote console (vnc based) to connect to guests.

A colleague who is using ESX told me that Windows Remote Desktop has a
better performance than the official remote console.  You can use a
Linux RDP client to make such a connection, or if you are in a safe
environment, disable encryption for the console traffic.

The GSX and the new VMWare Beta both provide tar files too.  If you
use an unsupported distro, it will look for gcc and the kernel source
to compile and install its own kernel module.

If you want only stable, then you must wait until June - I think. 
Thats when they release the free version.
