Not trying to insult anybody here, but if you just press the "update
everything" button without looking and understanding what it will do then
be prepared for breakage. That's not limited to proprietary drivers, but
these make upgrades harder to manage.
I'm sure it's possible to tell the ubuntu updater what not to upgrade,
though I don't know what that particular update software is.
I never trust automated scripts to mess with my bootloader and
kernels.
