A quick look in /var/log reveals this bit of top secret data:

/var/log/cups/error_log

And speaking of Ubuntu and printers, the problems described sound just like the
endless trouble I had trying to get printing working on Debian. Then I recently
installed Ubuntu on another machine and found that (installing with the printer
connected and turned on) everything worked in exactly the automagical way that I
had hoped for. But this was with a different printer (HP).
