Perhaps you misunderstood the issue, 

which is references that are _not_ part of a thread.

I'm familiar with thread view. 

In Sylpheed 2.2.0beta5, (as in earlier versions also), 
thread view does a great job of indicating all the letters 
of a thread. It does not indicate referred letters that 
are _not_ part of the thread.

[1] A minor aside is that in the "View" menu on my 
Sylpheed 2.2.0beta5, there is a "Thread view" item, 
but not a "Threaded view" item.
