That's because it's, ahem, a little outdated.

You're using a 3 year old mail client that has been updated several times.

In February 2003, sylpheed-0.8.10 was the development branch of
sylpheed-1.0. sylpheed-1.0 was released on December 24th 2004.

Since then, development of the GTK+1.2 version has been halted and an
official development branch of a GTK+2 version, sylpheed-1.9.0, was
released a year ago. sylpheed-2.0.0-beta1 was released in June 2005, an rc
in July, and the official GTK+2 version, sylpheed-2.0.0, in August.

Right now I'm using 2.2.0beta5, released on Friday.

If you'd rather stick with GTK+1.2 there's always
http://sylpheed.good-day.net/sylpheed/v1.0/sylpheed-1.0.6.tar.bz2

The reason we come up with new versions is not to fix bugs. It's
absolutely not.
