Searching for "references header" in  the Gmail Help Discussion group
brings up plenty of hits, all of which are relegated to a 'past
discussions' thread which is read only.

However I'm starting to think that that particular group (and it's
subgroups) are little more than a concentration camp for newbies.  The
most positive responses simply direct people to the following page:
and I encourage anyone, gmail user or not, to please go there and
encourage Gmail to 'Do the Right Thing'(tm).
